Since being diagnosed with dyslexia and ADHD at the beginning of 2022, Krystle not only understands now why she had to work harder when she was younger, but also since sharing publicly has realised she isn't alone.

Sharing her journey publicly, Krystle prompted a host of conversations with her expansive network, giving people the confidence to discuss their personal relation to dyslexia and ADHD. She listened to them and has now built a community, The Growth Assemble, to support the neurodiverse community by taking a collective approach to achieving goals, improving financial confidence, and building social capital.

With this, Krystle has recently won the Top 80 Neurodiversity Evangelists UK 2023 award as well as Top 100 Black Women in Tech 2020, Top 100 Women INvolve Yahoo Future Leaders 2022 and Great British Businesswoman Rising Star Winner 2022.

Krystle's position as Head of Finance has afforded her the unique position of better understanding how to address the financial needs of all employees. She has proactively researched the correlation between improving employee financial wellbeing, confidence, productivity and businesses performance- and this led to her founding Mind Over Money.

Rukayyat expresses how challenging it was to move from Nigeria (a country that encourages women to be successful) to the UK, where a distinct male-dominated culture exists in the finance space. Rukayyat has since moved to Germany and that is where she founded PaceUP Invest- and until recently, she was the only black female fintech founder in Germany.

Growing up in a community where women empowered women, she carried those learns and culture forwards, creating PaceUp to help women and underrepresented communities with finance, and encouraging a greater understanding of financial well-being. It also provided Rukayyat with a platform to empower the next generation, and educate them on the role they play in driving change.

Andrew is part of the digital commerce division at Worldline– specialising in gaming and entertainment partners– and is passionate about opening access to the financial technology community and building better gender equality in the space.

After graduating in Psychology and European Politics, Andrew took a deep dive into the world of payments and FinTech and was immediately hooked. However, his personal– yet not uncommon– experience of a "rocky start" into the industry encouraged him always to strive to help and coach others whenever he has the chance; be it advice on getting a job, or picking up a new skill.

Clearly, things are going in the right direction and the pair are here to celebrate that and to talk about how we can accelerate this positive change even more!

Reports in early 2020 showed that only 17% of all technology roles in the UK were filled by women. This low figure is a reflection of what needs to change; we need to hire and support more women in the space because despite what people may think, women DO exist in tech.

We are honoured to have contributed to the recent progression made in moving the needle for change and will continue to spread awareness beyond when it reaches an acceptable number!

This week, Nadia is joined by the illustrious all-round FinTech expert, Elizabeth Lumley – Technology and Transaction Banking Editor at The Banker.

Elizabeth has been in the FinTech world since the 90s when she applied for a journalism ad in the New York Times to cover a publication called Inside Market Data. As a self-professed "hardcore financial technology person", Elizabeth has been covering the FinTech space before everyone even started calling it "FinTech"!

The pair discuss the current power imbalance around financial inclusion which puts millions of people, especially poorer women, at a disadvantage. Elizabeth states, "money is power, money is freedom... There’s a big difference between knowing your mortgage is going to be paid every month, and you have food on the table and Santa Claus comes to your house every year… that’s a big deal that changes a lot of people’s lives. The banking industry supports that as a service and I think some of the best bankers in the world are people that understand that they are supporting people’s lives"The conversation leads to the topic of sexism and misogyny routed within the startup world and Elizabeth shares some truly inspiring and powerful messages for those in minority groups who have ambitions in this industry. Lumley stresses the importance of diversity and how having people from different backgrounds within your team will drive a plethora of knowledge you didn't have, and didn't know existed.
